Expect The Best

I was speaking with an elderly relative recently and she was telling me how she keeps a Butcher's knife at the ready, just in case someone was to break into her home. During this conversation, it dawned on me, how prepared we are for the bad things in life. Everything, from the music to the shows on television to the daily dose of news that so many can't seem to live without, has programmed us to expect the worst. Based on all that negative energy being sent out into the world, it's no wonder we get back negative.

Wouldn’t it be great if we prepared for and believed in the good with the same certainty with which we expect the bad? For many, it is not a question of if, but when. Yet we lament the sadness of our lives and how things always go wrong. Well of course it does. After all, we are always waiting expectantly for things to go awry. Many of us don’t understand the power of our thoughts and our beliefs to craft our lives.

Exercise: Spend this week expecting good things. If you have problems conjuring up something good in your mind, without prompting, then write it down on a card and carry it with you.

For example, if you’ve been having bad days, start the day by saying, “Today is a blessed and wonderful day. It is full of miraculous power. God has made this day and I will rejoice in it.” You may not believe it at first but say it with a smile and keep saying it. If you can’t remember it, write it down on a small sheet of paper and keep it with you.

Pull it out throughout the day and say the words to yourself. Try to do that for a whole week. The goal of this is to start to prepare your mind to think and believe differently. Especially if this isn’t something you are familiar with.

If possible try and keep a journal to track how things began to change. If you feel compelled report back and let us know how you are doing. By doing so you will encourage others.
